Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival 2014 – 7, 8, 9 March by John Heenan

Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival 2014 – 7, 8, 9 March by John Heenan

Zen Hussies – As excellent and exuberant as ever. Really lively mix of styles, bits of New Orleans jazz, ska, swing, and more. Excellent bari sax from Charlotte Ostafew, and trumpet from Jonny Bruce (who popped up in 5 different bands during the weekend – and I only saw a fraction of the events on offer).

Greg Cordez Quintet – Jake McMurchie produced a lovely sound on tenor sax though, overall, the set was too far up the bebop scale for my taste. ‘8 minutes 23’ (supposedly a reflection on the time taken for us to find out the sun has died) was imaginative, with a lovely finish (it didn’t last the full 8:23).

Michelson Morley – Jake McMurchie back again, but this time in full on ‘Get the Blessing experimental mode, but lacking the drive that comes from Jim Barr’s bass and Clive Deamer’s drums. Weird electronic sounds scarcely recognisable as coming from a sax, and even the band didn’t seem too sure at times whether a piece had run it’s course or not.

Big Buzzard Big Band – Part of a huge set up of 21 piece band (including Jonny Bruce and Andy Hague on trumpets) with five choirs, and Jacqui Dankworth performing original arrangements of Gershwin pieces. Some worked well, others like ‘Summertime’ (which I didn’t recognise until well into the number) not so well. Andy Williamson did a very good tenor sax solo; with good contributions from the 2 alto players whose names I didn’t catch in the runthrough of 21 names.

Pete Gage Band – Lovely blues session from the Dr Feelgood man (who must sandpaper his throat every morning) with full on sax solos from Craig Crofton, in contrast to the former laid back style of Ray Colomb. Quick cameo from Jonny Bruce on one number.

Hornstars – Bristol University top end big band performed brilliantly, both collectively and, in the various solos, individually. Well worth seeing on one of their gigs around the area.

Conjunto Gringo – Wonderful, no holds barred Latin stuff – Mariachi, Salsa, Bossa Nova, the lot! Had a couple of hundred people dancing in the Colston Hall foyer. Overran their slot by ten minutes, then riotous applause forced an encore – the only one I saw among the foyer bands. The stars were undoubtedly Hague and Bruce on trumpets, but Ben Waghorn kept up well on tenor sax.
